Do you lay awake at night, wondering if you're a good person? Or trying to convince yourself that you are? Or maybe replaying memories, confirming you definitely aren't a good person?
I'll admit, I have.
In Matthew 19:17, Jesus says, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God."
Galatians 5 says that goodness is one of the fruits of the Spirit, and we'll know someone is a Christian by the fruit of the Spirit being evident in his or her life.
How can both be true?
As humans, we are intrinsically not good. Goodness isn't something we can attain on our own because we all sin.
Goodness requires sinlessness--that our sins have been forgiven.
When we become Christians, though, we receive the Holy Spirit, who cultivates goodness in us.
If you still find yourself wondering if you're a good person, here's a checklist.
Do you love God?
Do you make others feel welcome?
Do you make others feel included?
Do you make others feel loved?
Those are the two greatest commands. (Matthew 22:37-39)
